In its short-sightedness, blogger has turned its back on those of us stuck with old operating systems and I'm forced to find a new blog host. You will now find MickMathersARTblog at Blog.com - use the direct link found in the masthead and remember to update your bookmarks. This place will continue as another archive for a large body of my work. As many of you know, my primary medium and working method is digital collage composed of manipulated photographs often combined with digital drawing & generative images. Netlabels, bands and musicians can view samples of my CD Cover Art at Mick Mather Illustration located on Tumblr. In another life I was an Arts & Culture consultant specializing in revitalization planning through creative public art projects and programs with Economic & Community Development Departments of towns, villages and cities. In these hard financial times this work is more important than ever and I still accept consultancy inquiries. You can contact me by email at: mickmather@yahoo.com

L: "Cars - Alternate Version" - R: "Cars on Main Street"
L: montage - R: photograph

The Car
I had quite a few comments on the original post at Illustration Friday on May 25th, 2007. So, I thought it might be fun to give a little bit extra as regards its development. Alongside the original photograph, I offer an alternate version of said original post - I found it rather busy at this stage, took a U-turn and went back to the drawing board. Below is the single car that was cut out of the photograph and sent to the array of filters and manipulating software here at the Secret Visual Laboratory. The car was isolated completely from the background first and then the fun began. If there are other questions regarding this image, I might (key word = "might") be obliged to reveal a secret or two ... in fact, at the original post, I already did reveal something about the Lab! :D

Two Hour Parking -

"Pub Dart"
The Totem Project
public sculpture - wood, metal and coated wire by Mick Mather & Rick Destito
In 2002 I began a journey into the realm of Public Art. In my home town, Syracuse, New York, I saw that the City was replacing parking meters with parking meter pay stations, leaving hundreds of headless parking meter posts behind. What to do with these? My idea was to sleeve public sculptures over the old posts - using them as a foundation for installation. To that end I began applying for funding and formed partnerships with The City of Syracuse Department of Community Development within the Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today (TNT) Program, The Cultural Resources Council of Syracuse & Onondaga County, 40 Below Public Arts Task Force, The Downtown Committee and The Armory Square Association. To give the early cross-eyed looks and skewed glances a better idea of what I meant, my own design for a sculpture, the Pub Dart seen here, was passed around the table. 4 years later, this project is finally being installed with 16 artists siting 16 different sculptures in 16 different places in Downtown Syracuse, New York. Can you say road trip? I knew that you could!
